Students got to bring home some art this week. Nice job everyone!!!! We also took our final CPAA assessment. Please remember that this is just a quick snapshot of what your child can do, and oftentimes the children are asked questions on material that has not been covered in class. This can sometimes skew their scores. If you have concerns when you receive your child's scores, please contact your homeroom teacher.
Hola Amigos! Please read the document below for information about Spanish! In Theater, the children are finishing up their work with puppets before moving on to a new activity. Nice work!!! We have also learned a new word: Responsibility! Second grade taught us this word during their assembly a couple of weeks ago, and the children in First Grade are stepping up their game as they show us how THEY can be responsible. Way to go!!!
First Grade took their second CPAA this week. Results will be handed out after your child's conference on Friday. It is important to remember that this online assessment, while it can be useful, does not always give the most accurate picture of where your child is academically. There are many factors that can affect CPAA results, not least of which is the fact that many concepts have not been taught in class yet. If you have questions or concerns after viewing your child's results, please contact your child's homeroom teacher for more information. Many times the teacher can show you the questions asked, and help put your mind at ease. The students have also been doing some acting with puppets! Mrs. Lerner always strives to make her theater class fun and interactive. Way to go, Mrs. Lerner! This week was very exciting for the children, as they were able to show their parents and teachers how much they have been learning in their dance class! Dance is only once a week, but boy, do these kids know how to boogie! Social Emotional Learning with Ms. Newburn also occurred this week. Ms. Newburn has been working with the children on the feelings of others, and how we can read body language and facial expressions, as well as what others say, to figure out how they must be feeling.
This week in Technology, it was National Week of Code! Students got to experience coding through Code.org, and other websites, led by their Tech teacher. Coding is simply giving computers instructions, and the students love doing it through mazes and games on these interactive sites. We also made snowflakes in Art, in honor of the winter season. The children loved being able to create their own unique designs! We have not posted violin photos in a while! Take a look at one of our classes below. The students have begun using bows and are making wonderful progress!
![]() The kiddos did an absolutely fantastic job with their theater performances!!!! The shows were a ton of fun to watch, and we think the kids had a lot of fun as well. Thank you to Mrs. Lerner for putting on these productions with them and helping them practice for their big premier!!! If your child is interested in doing more in theater or acting, please ask Mrs. Lerner about our VRT program, an after school program that puts on several performances throughout the year, using students from various grade levels. You can scroll down to find Mrs. Lerner's email on the right hand side. Check out the fantastic projects we made in art this week! We made pictures of Van Gogh's sunflowers with oil pastels, then added REAL SUNFLOWER SEEDS, to tie our project into our science PBL. In library, Ms. Parrish showed us how to make a Jack-o-lantern mask through an original story of her own! As she tells the story (The boy went through the door, or window...), the students cut out certain parts of their folded construction paper with scissors. When the story is over and they unfold their paper, they have a cool and unique Jack-o-lantern mask! Finally, our students are getting ready for their first theater performance! They have been practicing their lines and learning how they will move during the performance. The schedule for the performances is as follows:
1. Mrs. Reguera's class: October 26th, at 10 am. 2.Ms. Cooney's class: October 26th, at 11:30 am. 3.Mrs. Bates's class: October 27th, at 10 am. 4.Mrs. McKenzie's class: October 28th, at 10 am 5.Ms. Alvarado's class: October 29th, at 10 am. 6. Ms. Jones's class: October 30th, at 10 am. If you have any other more specific questions about the performance, please contact our theater teacher, Mrs. Lerner, directly. [email protected] First Grade tied their science learning to their technology time as well this week, by playing games online where they grow their own plants, and labeling the different parts of a plant using a Google Slide. We have also had a second lesson with Ms. Newburn, for Social Emotional Learning. Here are a few pictures from the lesson with Ms. Jones's class and Ms. Cooney's class.
Special classes continue to be a blast for the children! See a letter from our Spanish teachers below, as well as pictures from this week. PE this week: Check out what our classes are up to in violin class, with Mr. Klarfeld and Ms. Weberpal! Children are also having a blast in General Music with Mrs. Rochon. This week they got to play on Orff instruments, which are shown below in the middle of the room. Art with Ms. Schrynemeekers has also been a ton of fun!
![]() The children are enjoying all of their specials, and having a fun time experiencing new things. Here are some of the things we did this week, as well as some messages from some of the special teachers! Here are some messages from our language teachers (both French and Spanish), about conferences on Friday:
The class French teachers, Lena Villavicencio and Julie Estep, will be available on September 11th as well. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding the French curriculum for the year and/or questions about your child(ren) progress' in the classroom, feel free to schedule an appointment directly with them at [email protected] and [email protected] Thank you all for your help and patience! Lena and Julie Dear parents: It’s a good time to get together! A quick reminder to all PARENTS from Spanish classes that if you want to share something about your son or daughter during teacher’s conference; please don’t hesitate to contact us by e- mail in order to schedule a meeting with us. Sra. Martinez [email protected] and Sra. Sader [email protected] In the second week of school, students are continuing to get used to routines in these classes and getting to know their teachers better. In Technology, the children practiced finding letters on the keyboard and building fine motor skills through games on www.tvokids.com. Children are learning to use the external mouse they connect to their Chromebooks, and the Bees and Honey games on this site help the children to master this skill.
Please send a pair of headphones to school with your child if you have not already done so. In their music classes, children are doing a variety of introductory activities such as practicing holding a box violin correctly, and participating in singing and playing group games. In their special classes, students have spent time getting used to routines, getting to know their teachers, and receiving important information for them and their parents. Technology: This week, students talked about how to use technology, and especially the internet. They learned some new words like "privacy", and "honorable". Tech teachers spent class time discussing the appropriate uses of technology at school, and the importance of keeping passwords private. Students also received the Honorable Use Policy from their Tech teacher, and need to sign the form with their parents, then return it to school. As was mentioned on the homepage, without this signed form being brought back to school, students will NOT be allowed to use the Internet. Violin and Percussive Art: Students spent time this week learning to hold a box violin. It is important that students learn how to properly hold the instrument to prevent dropping, or other misuse. Once this habit is established, students will get to practice with a real violin. In Percussive Art, students got to hear about the instruments they will be using, as well as practice their singing. PE/Dance:
PE has been interesting this week, due to inclement weather. Students have been performing a wide variety of exercises within their classrooms, with the help of their coaches and teacher assistants. Jumping jacks, lunges, running in place, and dancing are just some of the activities your child has been engaging in during their PE time. Dance takes the place of PE once a week, and is in an upstairs classroom. Theater: Since it was only the first week of school, our theater teacher, Mrs. Lerner played a name game with the children to get to know them. Here at Village, we value skills beyond the academic. First grade students take the following special classes throughout the week:
