We have completed our assessments and are beginning a review of everything we have learned this year. In Unit 9 we will be reviewing measurement, two digit addition, giving change, fractions and shapes. Please review coins and their value, ask your child word problems linked to money. E.g. “If I spent 20 cents in the shop how much change would I get from a quarter?” Keep memorizing those number bonds as it speeds up learning. Your child will be ready for solving problems when they know their number facts by heart. It is important for Second Grade to have memorized these facts.
We are all nearing the end of Unit 8 and this week has been very busy. We have been looking at time to the half hour, data and what information you can tell from a graph or chart. We have been solving number puzzles related to a number square, trying to find the missing numbers. We will be completing Unit 8 assessment and starting Unit 9. In Unit 9 we will be reviewing Measurement, two digit addition and giving change. Please review coins and their value, ask your child word problems linked to money. E.g. “If I spent 20 cents in the shop how much change would I get from a quarter?” Keep memorizing those number bonds as it speeds up learning. Your child will be ready for solving problems when they know their number facts by heart.
We are working hard on Unit 8; the main focus recently has been shape. The students should be able to recognize 2D shape and name their attributes. They have also been making shapes from shape, eg. A rectangle can be made from two squares. We have looked at 3D shapes and are familiarizing ourselves with the number of faces, corners and edges these shapes have. We can also name the shapes that make some 3D shapes. We have also introduced simple fractions, like halves (2 equal parts), and fourths (four equal parts). Unit 8 progresses with time to the half hour, data handling and what information you can tell from a graph. We will be reinforcing the number grid and solving number puzzles. At the end of the unit we will complete our assessment.
Keep memorizing those number bonds as it speeds up learning. Your child will be ready for solving problems when they know their number facts by heart. We have had a busy week and as always are working hard. We have completed the Unit 7 assessments, Challenge question, and Open Response. The Open Response often poses a question where the students have to explain how they were able to find a solution to the problem. This is often tricky for First Graders and so the best advice is keep the explanation simple and straight forward. Drawing a picture is often the best answer. These solutions will be reinforced in the class, sometime comparisons are made and the children can see what the best answer was and why. Unit 8 progresses with more shape work. It will include how combining 2 D shapes make other shapes. We will also look at 3D shapes and their properties. Please continue to talk to your child about shapes around us and what they see. The students should recognize half and fourth as fractions. Keep memorizing those number bonds as it speeds up solving problems.
Time is flying by and we are busy consolidating our learning and working hard on Finding the Rule and using that rule to solve missing numbers. Using a number grid or number line is a great way to check that the students have got the correct answer. They can also use these clues to solve the problems and we encourage them to do so. We have been introduced to simple elapsed time problems and have been using clocks to solve these problems. We are completing the Unit 7 assessment at the beginning of the next week and then will move onto Unit 8. We will be working with shapes, talking about attributes and also making shapes from shapes. Please talk to your child about shapes that they can see around them. Fractions will be revisited and the words half and fourth should be recognized by the children. Keep memorizing those number bonds as it speeds up solving problems
We have had a short, busy and fun filled week. In Math, we have been working on shape recognition and naming some attributes of shapes. The students should be able to tell you information about 2D shapes. We had one of our favorite days: an Exploration Day. We had various group activities. Playing “Salute” and consolidating our Fact Families. Making attribute trains was a favorite. Recognizing fractions and sharing shapes into equal parts was also fun. Next week sees us focusing on “What’s my Rule?” We will be using the clues to solve problems and recognize number patterns. We will also be reviewing time looking at digital and analogue clocks. Please play the time games on www.ictgames.co.uk to help reinforce the students’ prior knowledge
Keep memorizing those number bonds as it speeds up solving problems. ![]() We have had a short, fun filled week. In Math, we have been consolidating addition and subtraction strategies, as well as diving deeper into fact families. The children have been playing games using different methods of recording their facts. We have modeled different strategies for problems on the board and talked about what method is best for finding our answers and why others are not such a good choice.
Next week sees us moving onto shape and fractions. Keep memorizing those number bonds as it speeds up solving problems. We have a short fun filled week. In Math, we started Unit 7 with our main focus being Fact Families. The children have been learning that at fact family is made up of three numbers and these numbers are linked. When using the same three numbers you can make two addition and two subtraction sums. The exception to this rule is when two of the smaller numbers are the same. Ms. Alvarado's class did a lot of math learning this week! After vacation we will be consolidating addition and subtraction strategies and moving on to the attributes of shapes and introducing fractions.
Memorizing number bonds is very important and speeds up solving problems. Please continue to work on memorizing these with your child. This week we have completed Unit 6 and been reviewing all that we have learned over the past few weeks. We have been consolidating our learning in preparation for the assessments. Next week we will begin Unit 7 before Spring Break. In Unit 7 we will be looking at number fact strategies, fact families and attributes of shapes.
Memorizing number bonds is very important and speeds up solving problems. Please continue to work on memorizing these with your child. This week we have been focusing on our number facts and solving two step word problems making sure we showed how we solved the word problems. We have also introduced Collection Boxes and have been trying to think of unusual ways to fill our boxes showing the number. Be sure to check out the Parent Letter to go with Lesson 5 – 9 to help you. We have revisited place value and are focusing the value that each digit represents.
Next week will see us rounding off the unit and completing our assessment of Unit 6. ![]() This week we have been focusing on doubling numbers and adding or subtracting numbers to help us solve addition problems. It is a different strategy to use to help when adding. We have been playing lots of different games to help us learn these facts. We have also been adding and subtracting numbers within 20, and regrouping tens and ones. The students have been looking at their reference book to find information from it. Next week sees us reviewing place value and applying this to money exchanges. We will also be looking at multi step word problems.
Please continue to memorize number bonds as knowing these facts is important and helps our math problem solving. We have introduced time, doubles and shape this week. Important things to remember are to use the clues on the clock. There are 60 minutes in a hour and these are shown on the clocks we use. The students should become familiar with both digital and analogue clocks. We had an Exploration Day where we reviewed shapes: naming them and their attributes, working on geoboards, doubled numbers and practiced our number bonds There has been lots of learning. Please reinforce all this work by using www.ictgames.co.uk Go to shape, doubles and time. There are fun games here that the students can play consolidating their new and prior learning this week. Next week sees us doubling numbers and adding or subtracting 1 to find an answer. This is offering students a new strategy to know their number facts. The students will be introduced to their Reference Book and how to use it.
Please continue to memorize number bonds as knowing these facts is important and helps our Math problem solving. ![]() We have concluded Unit 5 and also our assessments. We also had lots of fun on our 100th Day doing many different Math activities linked to one hundred. Look outside our rooms for our Math Boxes showing the many ways the students could make 100. Many came up with great ideas. Next week we will start Unit 6 and will be reviewing time, consolidating two digit number addition, and doubles. Please continue to memorize number bonds as knowing these facts is important and helps our Math problem solving. We enjoyed an Exploration Day working with paper clips to measure the quickest routes on our way to finding treasure, making exchanges with tens and ones and comparing numbers using the greater than, equal to or less than signs. The students have been comparing numbers and finding the difference between the two numbers. Several students found this concept hard to grasp and required extra practice and practical activity. We will be consolidating their learning and will revisit this topic again. Next week we progress to two digit addition and will complete Unit 5 with our assessment. We will also be celebrating our 100th Day in school and have lots of fun Math activities planned around the number. Please continue to work on learning number facts as this will assist the students when doing two digit additions.
We continue to work hard and are appreciating numbers, their value and can recognize numbers that re greater than, less than and equal to. We revisited measuring using nonstandard units and were able to measure zigzags. The students must continue to work on consolidating their number facts and commit these to memory. This will assist in their addition especially when we progress to adding two digit numbers. Next week we will have an Exploration Day and we will be introducing Base 10 exchanges and working with two digit addition and subtraction.
The students are picking up place value nicely, working with double digit numbers in order to differentiate between the ones and the tens place. Dimes were also introduced this week, as a way to demonstrate place value. Students were able to learn some new games to help instill these concepts, such as Dime/Penny Exchange, the Digit Game, and Guess my two Digit Number. Students were also introduced to relation symbols, concentrating on the big three: Greater than, Less than, and Equal to. They practiced balancing equations to make them true, such as with __ < 42.
This week we began unit 5, place value and money. We have worked with place value mats, making two digit numbers, and exchanging pennies for dimes. The students learned that the the number in the tens place represents a larger number than what it shown. For example, in the number 52, the two represents only two units, while the five represents fifty units. We have been working with numbers and focusing on addition sums using different strategies to find our answers. In number work we have been introduced to doubles and how knowing these facts can help us add quickly. We are trying hard to remember our number facts too. Next week will see us conclude Unit 4 the students will do their assessments related to their learning.
Next year will see us begin Unit 5 where we will be working on place value, appreciating bigger and smaller numbers and being able to write numbers in order form largest to smallest or vice versa. On return from our Thanksgiving holiday we reviewed our measuring and talked about the best strategies for measuring objects and why. We have been working on explaining our answers keeping the information detailed but simple. The students enjoyed their Exploration Days constructing designs out of flats, rods and units. They made shapes on geoboards and then copied these onto dotted paper using a ruler. It is good for the children to practice using a ruler to draw lines. It is something some pupils find tricky. We have been gathering data making tally charts and talking about the information we can learn from these. In number work we have been introduced to doubles and how knowing these facts can help us add quickly. Next week we will be working on our number bonds and the strategies we should use when adding three numbers together Some of the classes also connected their math knowledge with what they were learning about Hanukkah this week. Ms. Jones's class learned about dreidels and got to play the game with coins in small groups. They had a blast! We have been started Unit 4 and we have been using nonstandard units to measure objects around the classroom. We have used things such as cubes, paperclips, tooth picks and pencils to measure items. We have been Exploring and collaborating with each other so there has been a lot of learning going on. After Thanksgiving we will return to data handling and gathering information that we can put in graphs.
Keep practicing your number facts. Remember Math is fun and all around you! This week has seen us conclude and review Unit 3. The students have been using the skills learned to complete their assessments. These will be sent home for you to review with your child and then return to school next week. Next week we begin Unit 4 and we will be using objects such as cubes, paperclips to measure objects around the classroom. We will also be looking rulers, yardsticks and tape measures to decide what is the best tool to measure objects and why.
Keep practicing your number facts. Remember Math is fun and all around you! This week the major focus for most of our classes was solving problems on a number line. Students worked on solving addition and subtraction problems with and without mystery numbers, as well as finding patterns and using number grids to complete addition and subtraction facts. The students have been introduced to Frames and Arrows diagrams to solve problems that involve addition, subtraction and counting. The students know that they have to write the rule. To help find solutions they are able to use their number grids. The students have played games linked to our learning and have been familiarizing themselves with calculators. Keep practicing number facts!
Next week will see the conclusion of Unit 3 and the students will review all of their learning prior to completing the assessment. This week our focus has been using a Number Line to count forwards and backwards from a given number. The children have been showing the skips they take and record their work. The children have also been beginning work on making estimates, and then counting objects and seeing how close their estimate was. We have also had fun with pumpkin Math using different ways to find the girth and height of our pumpkins. We used a scale to find the weight and made an estimation of the number seeds inside our pumpkin. We then counted the seeds to check our estimation, which reinforced our learning about estimation. Next week the students will be introduced to Frames and Arrows diagrams to solve problems that involve addition, subtraction and counting.
![]() Onward we go to Unit 3 where we have been consolidating our number bonds and creating our own number stories. The students should all be familiar with turnaround facts, counting forwards from the bigger number and be working on remembering their number facts. Some of our classes have already enjoyed their Exploration Day where they played games, counted large numbers of pennies, ordered objects by length, and worked with doubles and counting these. As always the Exploration Day is a big success with lots of fun learning taking place. Some of our classes will dive into their explorations next week. We have also done some cross-curricular activities (where we mix subjects) this week, taking seeds and using them to create number stories and patterns! You can see some of them below! Next week our focus will be using a Number Line to count forwards and backwards.
