Wow! Awesome job First Grade!!!!! The Go Fish show was incredible! Thank you to the entire fine arts team for all their hard work and dedication: Kathy Rochon (voice) Chelsea Lerner (theater) Adam Klarfeld (violin) Francie Weberpal (violin) David Lerner (marimbas) Also, a HUGE shout out to facilities and the IT team for helping to ensure that everything was set up/taken down correctly, and that the sound system was working! We appreciate all your help. Our last field trip has come and gone, and it was a fun one!!!! Little Beakers is a great place that plans and executes experiments for children. They got to make fake snow, glow in the dark slime, and see what happens when you mix chemicals inside a sealed beaker. What an awesome way to close out our First Grade field trips!!!! ![]() Last Saturday, the Village School hosted a Google summit, where teachers and administrators from all over came to our school to learn about technology and how to use it more effectively in their teaching. One of the sessions available was a student showcase, where 1st-4th graders shared with the visitors what they had been learning in their technology classes. Ms. Jones and Ms. Alvarado attended the summit and got to see the First Graders represent our school! They were amazing!!!! Wednesday evening we had a "Night at the Museum", where children's artwork from each grade level was on display and several violin students provided music and ambiance. The artwork looked fantastic and the music sounded great. Well done to all the students, and a big shout out to Ms. Caruso, who got this plan rolling! She also assisted the First Graders in learning about photography, which was on display as part of the show. Ms. Caruso, you are awesome! In order to raise money for diabetes, Village school did a fundraiser allowing the children to dress up as their favorite book character. The children had a lot of fun and got really creative with their costumes. Thank you to all the children and their families who donated money to this wonderful cause!!!!!! ![]() The children worked so very hard on their assembly and on Thursday, we saw it come to fruition. They knew their lines, sang their songs, and taught the entire school about caring. Well done to ALL of our First Graders, you rocked it out!!!!!! In case you were unable to attend, here are the wonderful, diverse categories of caring that we covered: 1. Mrs. McKenzie's class- Caring for plants 2. Mrs. Reguera's class: Caring for Texas (state symbols) 3. Ms. Jones's class: Caring for our bodies (exercise) 4. Ms. Cooney's class: Caring for animals 5. Mrs. Bates's class: Caring for our friends (empathy) 6. Ms. Alvarado's class: Caring for our communities (our visit to the Houston Food Bank) See pictures below: First Grade rocked Go Texan Day, with a set of fabulous dances in the Moore Gym!!! Way to go First Graders! Yee-haw!!!! ![]() Monday was Chinese New Year! The children discussed the holiday, and got to do some fun activities with this theme. Did you know that this year is the year of the monkey? We had a lot of fun making lanterns, dragons, and learning about another culture. This week has been jam-packed with special events/days. Thursday, we began our morning with an assembly led by Second Grade. Their word this month is responsibility. We learned how we can be responsible in every part of our lives. It is super important to remember to be responsible! The most exciting part of our day was later that morning, when we got to meet Jory John! He is the author of many children's books, including Goodnight Already, I Love You Already, and many, many more! Thank you to Blue Willow bookshop for organizing this and sending us an amazing author! A big shout out to Ms. Parrish, our librarian for working hard to make this happen! We appreciate everything you do. And finally, thank you to all the staff members who helped with technology and made sure everything went smoothly:
We appreciate all your help to make this author visit the stupendous event that it was!!!

We learned about why there are people who do not get enough to eat, how we can help, and reinforced our learning about healthy eating and exercise. The children really felt rewarded by helping those in need, and the staff at the food bank were very impressed. We helped assemble "backpacks" that are given to hungry children on a Friday, and will feed them all weekend. The children set up assembly lines, with each child choosing an item to place in the backpack. At the end of our visit, we made over 450 backpacks for hungry children! WAY TO GO VILLAGE!!!! If you would like to take your child to volunteer outside of school (most of them expressed an interest in returning to help), please visit their website at: http://www.houstonfoodbank.org/volunteer/volunteer/ a visit from Houston's opera-on-the-go, our holiday sing along, and our class winter parties12/18/2015 ![]() This week was SO MUCH FUN!!!! The students and their teachers had a blast with all the special activities going on. First, on Wednesday, we had a morning visit from the Houston Opera's Opera-on-the-go. They set up in our High school black box and performed The Velveteen Rabbit, a big hit! Take a look: This Thursday we also had our final Switcheroo of this semester. The children went to each classroom and did a fun activity or craft, such as making a holiday wreath, painting a penguin, watching Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and more! This Friday was also a jam-packed day! We began in the morning with our school wide sing along. The Fine Arts department really did an AMAZING job getting all the children who performed, prepared, and everyone did a wonderful job!!! Thank you so much to Mrs. Grout (our Emcee), Mrs. Rochon, Mr. Klarfeld, Ms. Weberpal, Mr. Lerner, and Mr. Dimitrov for all of the hard work you put in to make sure this show was a success! Another big thank you to everyone who helped with technology, music, and speakers for the performances. Great job everyone! Last, but not least, were our class parties. The children had a ton of fun making picture frames, dressing up for the photo booth, and playing pass the parcel. Thank you to all the HRP's for planning such a fun event! A big thank you to the parent volunteers also, who helped turn our rooms into winter wonderlands. We appreciate everything you all do! Once again, thank you for giving us the gift of getting to know your child! We hope all of you have a safe and joyful holiday season!!
This week was National Week of Code, and Monday, one of our First Grade classes, along with two Kindergarten classes participated in Hour of Code! There were four stations, and the children rotated around in fifteen minute increments. A shout out to Ms. O'Brien and Ms. Malcolm, our Tech teachers, for organizing this event. We had a blast! We also streamed a live webinar with two speakers from IBM, who talked to us about coding and let us ask questions. The children were very interested in this activity. Ms. Alvarado's birthday is on Sunday, and her class brought her a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a delicious basket of fruit. Happy Birthday Ms. Alvarado!
This month, Third Grade conducted their assembly about the word integrity. They did such a fantastic job of explaining this tricky word, and making it easy for every grade level to understand. There was music, singing, and dancing, as well as a skit and a cheer! Well done Third Grade! This morning, the First Graders did a switcheroo, in which they go around to each classroom and complete a different activity in each one, before finally coming to an end at their own classroom. The children decorated turkeys, read a story, created a Thanksgiving math number story, designed their own Thanksgiving floats for the parade, painted a Fall tree, and played a Native American math game! We had a blast!!! We had our second field trip of the year yesterday! We took a trip to Main Street Theater to see a production of “Goodnight Moon”. The children had a wonderful time and enjoyed the humor and acting throughout the show. They also looked lovely and grown-up in their dress uniforms, which were completely appropriate for attending the theater. At the end of the show, the actors came out and did a Q n A with the children, where they asked creative and thought provoking questions like “Why was the show different from the book?”, “How did you make the things on the stage move without touching them?”, and “How did the actors know when they were supposed to come on stage?”. Main Street Theater specializes in productions for children, and this latest show was another wonderful job! Check out more pictures below. Our parties were a blast! There was food, dancing, goody-bags, and fun for all! Thank you to all the parents who helped out with planning, set-up, and clean-up. A big thank you to all the parents who were able to make it as well. Your presence meant a lot to your child! See pictures of our fabulous time below! On Monday, the entire Village School participated in Read Across the Globe (RAG)! This exciting event was to set a world record for the most children being read to in 24 hours. The Guinness Book of World Records actually came to our school and counted us to make sure we all were being read to! It was very exciting!
Our first field trip was AWESOME!!! We all had a blast, and the weather could not have been better! Take a look at our photos below: Corn Maze: Hayloft: Pumpkin patch: Tractor ride: Jump area, Slide mountain, and Fort Dew Hickey: Homecoming! Homecoming is a wonderful tradition that is tied to the beginning of the football season. This afternoon and evening we will have two homecoming games at Village (middle, and high school), along with crowning the homecoming King and Queen. One of the ways Texans show their homecoming spirit is by wearing what we call "mums", which is short for chrysanthemum, a type of flower. Now-a-days, we do not wear real flowers, instead decorating a fake one with ribbons and toys. Some of our students and teachers purchases mums to show their school spirit! Another thing we do to get pumped up for the homecoming games is listen to the drum line march through the school playing their music. The kids were very excited to hear the drums, and meet some football players!
Wellness Day was on Monday, and the entire school incorporated wellness activities into their regular schedule. In the afternoon, we all went to the field and learned some basic yoga poses together. It was very relaxing. On Thursday, 4th Grade taught us about the word respect, and how we can show it both at Village, and outside of school. We got lots of ideas on how we can all be respectful Finally, this morning we had our Reading Celebration out on the field. The kids had a wonderful time reading their books, and then toasting their reading success! This week marked the first time that Ms. Newburn did a lesson with two of our classes. Ms. Newburn is our school counselor, and also helps us with social/emotional learning (being a good friend, having empathy, etc.). The first lesson Ms. Newburn did with First Grade was about following rules, and how doing so makes everyone successful and helps all of us to learn. See some pictures below of her teaching Mrs. McKenzie's class how to play "Your turn, My turn". Red Out Day!
Children got to wear red shirts and jeans to show their support of the American Diabetes Association. See pictures below: On September 3rd of last week, the Lower School had our first assembly of the year! This kick-off assembly was led by our Technology teachers, and our director, Ms. Rosen. Ms. Rosen talked to us about the Village Values, which we will celebrate each month with a special word that is reinforced throughout the entire school. This month, our word is saftey. |
