On Monday, we had our First Grade switcheroo, where the children get to go to each classroom and do a different activity. Since we have been doing author studies, the switcheroo reflected that.
The children got to learn about a different author in each class, by reading a book and doing a short, simple activity. They were able to compare and contrast different authors and the techniques they use in their writing. It was a ton of fun!

In writing, we are finishing our own stories in the style of our classroom author. The children have been working very hard on these and we are so proud of them!
In grammar, we continue our work with verbs, introducing past tense, in addition to present tense. In spelling, we learned about the long 'u' sound with a silent e, as in the word blue. Next week we begin work with wh words, like whale and when.

We are beginning our unit into nonfiction in reading. The children will read a variety of nonfiction over the course of this month. We will be concentrating on the different features of nonfiction texts, as well as learning about an animal and writing our own "all about" books.
